The world’s most fuel-efficient couple enter the record books powered by Shell Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel.
John and Helen Taylor have smashed the world record for a fuel-efficient drive of more than 9,000 miles through mainland America.
The couple, whose trip from Virginia back around to West Virginia took in 48 states, averaged 58.82 U.S. miles to the gallon, a full 14% improvement on the previous record of 51.58 U.S. miles per gallon.
They drove into the record books behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Jetta TDI filled with Shell Ultra Low Sulphur diesel, and used fuel-saving ‘FuelStretch’ driving tips developed with Shell.
“We are very excited and grateful to have broken the Guinness World Record for lowest fuel consumption across the 48 contiguous (neighbouring) United States,” says Helen Taylor. “We would like to thank Volkswagen for providing us with the new clean diesel Jetta that helped us get another world record and to Shell for supplying the diesel fuel.”
During their trip, which covered 9,419 miles, the Taylors exceeded 60 miles per gallon on several legs of the record-setting run. However, their total fuel cost of $653 averaged only 6.9 cents per mile.
They made 14 official check-in and refuelling stops along a counter-clockwise route and encouraged fans to e-mail them with comments and questions about fuel economy. By the end of the journey, more than 2,000 people had sent e-mails.
